Museu de Alberto Sampaio
At the Museu de Alberto Sampaio everything combines so that the visitor may wish to come back. During the visit, we get emotional without knowing why. Is it the pieces or is it the space? Or is it the pieces in that space? What is certain is that the visitor is filled with serenity and he lets himself be captivated by the beauty of the whole. Some are marvelled at the masterpieces left by the master silversmiths; others are touched by the serenity of Saint Mary of Guimarães or by the smile of Saint Mary «the Beautiful». And they are all overwhelmed with emotion when looking at the gambeson King João I wore at the Battle of Aljubarrota and at the silver gilt triptych offered by the same monarch to Saint Mary of Guimarães.
This is also the only national museum that opens its doors at night, from July to August. Visiting this «museum at night» is an experience you will never forget. During this period, the visitor is always surprised by an exhibition of contemporary art. This museum, undoubtedly, «merits any number of visits and this particular visitor swears to return every time he passes through Guimarães» (José Saramago).
