Our Lady lies on a sheet and her head rests on a richly decorated pillow trimmed with tassels. Her hands are placed in a praying attitude. Surrounding her, there are eight winged angel heads.
This sculpture represents the death of the Virgin. Some theologians hold that the Virgin only fell asleep – the Dormition of the Virgin – or made a journey – the Passing of Mary.
