During the 12th century, the ancient Monastery of Nossa Senhora da Oliveira was restructured by Count Dom Henrique, who turned it into his royal chapel. It would be at that time that the church was reoriented to the East and the existing cloisters were disrupted. These buildings would be again profoundly altered by work done at the turn of the fourteenth century under king Dom João I.
