Saint Gregory, a free-standing sculpture, wears a cope fastened with a brooch and a pontifical tiara. He holds a staff topped by a papal cross in his right hand and an open book on his left one.
Gregory became Pope in 590, after the death of Pelagius II. He was a great administrator and reformer of the church, namely regarding the primitive Christian chants and hymns and he is considered to be one of the Doctors of the Latin Church.
