This missal stand, with a wooden core and covered with pierced silver plaques, allowing a red velvet background to be seen, presents at the centre the monogram “I.H.S.” inserted in a radiant sun. The reinforcement of the spectacular dimension of the liturgy, promoted after the Council of Trent (1545 – 1563), was very much supported by the art of the silversmiths.
This piece follows the initial Baroque and the precepts resulting from the Council of Trent, namely the tendency for sumptuous decoration.
