The sculpture collection of the Museu de Alberto Sampaio embraces several domains – from devotional sculpture to mortuary and architectonic sculpture – distributed over several centuries and thus reflecting the evolution of the artistic sensibilities of the people and of the artists from those periods. The supports are also of various natures – from wood to limestone and granite, not forgetting marble and alabaster. A significant part of these pieces originates from the Collegiate Church of Guimarães or from other religious institutions of the city.
In this collection a special highlight must be given to the image of Saint Mary of Guimarães, from the 13th century, and that was worshiped in the church of the Colegiada de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira. The collection also includes works of Flemish influence from the 16th century and relevant sculptures such as Our Lady of the Good Death, from the 17th century, and the Flight into Egypt from the 18th century.
