Saint Clare’s Room

Saint Clare’s Room

Except for the furniture, almost all the pieces in this room come from the old Convento de Santa Clara of Guimarães.

That convent, founded in the 16th century by canon Baltazar de Andrade, school-master of the Colegiada de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira, was situated in the building nowadays occupied by the City Hall and it closed in 1891 when the last nun died. It was a rich institution, with vast assets and gains, whose nuns became well-known for their musical talent and for the production of sweets, namely the famous “toucinho do céu”.

In the first half of the 18th century, the inside of the church of the convent was renewed, having adopted a baroque decoration. In 1939, the main altarpiece was lost in a fire in the Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Penha, and so, from that set, only the side panels of the chancel, the two wood bas-reliefs placed on each side of the crossing arch, two big angel candleholders and a Flight into Egypt remain.
