Chalice and paten

Author: Unknown

Date: 14th century, end

Material: Gilt silver and enamel

Dimensions (cm): chalice – H 22 x D 21; paten – D 17,5

Provenance: Guimarães, Colegiada de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira

Inventory No.: MAS O 38 and MAS O 39

This chalice and the paten that accompanies it originally belonged to the Mosteiro de São Torcato, of the Order of the Canons Regular of Saint Augustine. It became part of the treasure of Our Lady of the Olive Tree when the respective church was annexed by the Colegiada de Nossa Senhora da Oliveira in 1476.

The chalice is made of embossed and engraved silver, with enamels. On the base, Saint James, Saint Peter, Saint John, Saint Andrew and two other saints (of difficult identification due to absence of iconographic characterisation) are represented. The hexagonal stem has a knop ornamented with foliage and enamelled plaques, depicting Christ and saints, among which Saint Peter and Saint Lawrence.

The paten is of more translucent enamel and, at its centre, an enamelled medallion stands out, showing Christ in Majesty, inside a mandorla, holding the orb in his hand.

Both the chalice and the paten are considered national treasures.
